Nooks

Nooks keep a place alive.

Knowing that somewhere not too far away there are likely more nooks, keeps me alive.

Nooks are the hidden fort in the woods, the recesses in the rock, the abandoned silo, the forgotten cemetery.

Tunnels.

For me, as a kid, it was the dams by the man-made lakes and the woods behind the golf course where I'd bring home bags of golf balls.

Nooks are something I always need more of, but something I share reservedly out of a hope to keep a nook a nook.  There is no process to finding a nook--it seems more to find you.

And nook is a great word.

I write of this now because, more than any other holiday, Halloween is a holiday of nooks.

Here's to exploring nooks on Hallow's eve!

May you find some dark place hidden beneath all the guide books and tourist maps, far away from anywhere someone of respectability would ever go.
